Advantages of the scale in the cloud

Everyone talks about the Internet of Things, but what do I get out of it?

Things are weighed because the weight information is needed to calculate prices and write invoices, to check qualities, to monitor work processes, to plan and invoice transports, to monitor material flows, to record inventories, etc.

For example, by saving filling results, the quality of the filling process can be proven, and with the additional recording of supplier name, batch number and order number, simple batch traceability can be realized.

In most cases, the data is needed by more and different people than those who operate the scale on site. So how do you get the data from the scale to these people?

What are the disadvantages of the most common approaches in practice compared to an innovative cloud application?

Disadvantages of the previous approaches:

  • Record weighing results in writing, pass them on and archive them
    • Time-consuming and therefore expensive
    • Manual processes are prone to errors
    • Data can only be used to a limited extent
    • No computer access to current data possible
  • Manual input of weighing results into a computer system on site
    • Time-consuming and therefore expensive
    • Manual processes are prone to errors
    • Data can only be used within the local ERP system
    • Data exchange with other software solutions is time-consuming to implement
  • Weighing results are stored on a USB stick on site and then transferred to an ERP system
    • Manual processes are prone to errors
    • Data must be collected over a period of time before it is transferred
    • Data can only be used within the local  ERP system
    • Data exchange with other software solutions is costly to implement
  • Weighing results are transmitted from the scale to a PC via the serial interface
    • The PC must be placed near the scale
    • Operation of the PC on site is necessary, this is problematic for untrained personnel
    • Data can only be used within the local  ERP system
    • Data exchange with other software solutions is time-consuming to implement
  • Weighing results are transmitted from the scale to an EDP system via the local network
    • Connecting the scales to the network is technically complex
    • IT departments are often skeptical about new devices
    • Necessary IT resources (know-how + manpower) are expensive and often not available at short notice
    • Data can only be used within the local  ERP system
    • Data exchange with other software solutions is time-consuming to implement

Benefits of the Heavy Data Cloud:

HD Komplettpaket 850

  • Weighing results are transmitted from the scale, via Heavy Data IoT gateway, to the Heavy Data cloud over a cellular connection
    • No intervention in the local network required, no local IT resources needed
    • Setup of a cloud account and connection of the scale via an IoT gateway can be realized quickly (within one week)
    • Preconfigured packages (with mobile connectivity) can be put into operation on site without IT know-how
    • The data is available for viewing and retrieval in the cloud immediately after weighing
    • No error-prone manual processes involved
    • No time-consuming manual processes necessary
    • The data can be viewed immediately by means of an Internet browser, independently of the local used software solution
    • All persons with access to the cloud (user name and password) can access the data across companies, worldwide and at any time
    • No additional time required for the distribution of data
    • Automatic data transfer requires no special training of personnel at the scale
    • Data can be easily downloaded from the cloud as a CSV file and further processed e.g. with MS-Excel
    • Optionally, a connection to ERP systems via API is possible at any time. This means that the system can be flexibly connected to existing IT systems. Mixed operation is also possible, e.g. certain users can then access the data in the ERP system while others view the data in the cloud
    • Ready-made packages make project costing and planning easy
    • Pilot projects with one scale are feasible at economic conditions and can be scaled freely as needed
